The early model GTL, ’12-’13, has a total shift throw of nearly 70mm. This long shift throw has the effect of making the K1600 transmission feel unnecessarily “clunky” when changing gears. BMW apparently recognized the problem and made a change to the ’14-’17 GTL models by shortening the transmission (upper) lever to reduce the total shift throw to 57mm. While it was an improvement, due to the physical restraints in this area of the bike and the single straight link it can’t really go far enough. The DMAC Short Throw Shift Kit will accommodate both variants of the GTL and will reduce the total shift throw by roughly 32mm on the early models and 18mm on the later models. Shifting is more “crisp” helping reduce the “clunking”, particularly in the lower rev ranges.
